Now, there is a good reason, of course, why Dom Howard was found in a motorcycle helmet on stage. He explained it to Crossbeat (thanks to Uchu for the translation):
Crossbeat: You made first appearance at Fuji Rock Festival in 2002, what left a deep impression on you?
Dom: The festival itself was amazing but personally I was struck with fear. (laughter) The cause of it was not the gig, the band, or the audience but insects! We played at Fuji several times but the last time (2007) was terrible. The worst gig I’ve ever had. The venue of the festival is an ski resort in forests in the mountains, so when all the lights on stage came on after nightfall, billions of insects got together all at once as if they had regarded them as the Moon. We were completely covered with insects on stage. Even though I hate insects so much, a beetle like 5 cm long was suddenly crawling in my shirt and trousers during the performance. I tried to concentrate on playing drums but I got distracted and couldn’t enjoy anything at all. I destroyed my drum kit so badly at the end of the gig. It was such a horrible experience. I saw a beetle crawling on Matt’s trousers and I remember I thought ‘shit!’ at that time. I never want to experience something like that. However, we knew we were going to play at Fuji Rock again (laughter), so I’ve had a special costume made for Fuji. It is a piece of silver jump suit like a leotard, it covers my whole body and doesn’t allow any kinds of insects to get in, it just lets my face out so that I can breathe. (laughter) I won’t be able to play unless I wear it, even if it looks so ugly. (laughter)

I didn’t record this one, I was at home being a). very lazy and b). missing half the broadcast because the stream started earlier than expected. So I am glad that Amelia did.
This is the whole broadcast, 50 minutes or so, including the much-loved MK Ultra. The video is missing the very beginning of Uprising, and in some places the sound appears to be half-a-second out of sync with the video, but other than that it’s perfect!
Enjoy it if you’ve missed it on Sunday.

For all of you new Musers out there, those of you who joined our ranks sometime this year and never had a chance to see this.  This was Muse’s first ever live performance on American TV - Uprising was broadcast live, I remember getting home in a hurry that day in order not to miss it.  I was so nervous that something might go wrong, it was live after all…  The gig was recorded on September 13th 2009 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, right across the street from the MTV Video Music Awards that were taking place in New York that day.
